Paro Festival
An 8-day Bhutan journey centered around the vibrant Paro Tshechu — sacred masked dances, ancient rituals, and colorful festivities, paired with cultural sightseeing across Paro, Thimphu, and Gantey.
Overview
The Paro Tshechu, held annually in the spring according to the lunar calendar,
is one of Bhutan's most significant and colorful religious festivals, celebrated
with immense devotion and enthusiasm by locals and visitors alike. This festival
usually spans several days and takes place in the courtyard of Paro Dzong, where
monks and laypeople gather to perform sacred rituals, dances, and ceremonies that
date back centuries.
The highlight of the festival is the masked dances (Cham dances), where monks
wear elaborate costumes and masks representing deities, animals, and historical
figures, narrating stories of morality, Buddhism, and the triumph of good over
evil. These dances are not only a spiritual offering but are also believed to
bring blessings, prosperity, and protection to the community.
During the festival, large crowds of Bhutanese dressed in traditional attire
fill the dzong, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere, while locals and
tourists alike marvel at the cultural performances, ritualistic music, and the
unfurling of the enormous Thongdrel, a sacred religious painting that is
displayed only during the festival and is believed to cleanse viewers of sins.
