Druk Wangyel / Dochula Festival
Experience the majestic Druk Wangyel Tshechu at the breathtaking Dochula Pass — sacred cham dances performed by the Royal Bhutan Army, 108 memorial chortens, Himalayan panoramas, and Bhutan's finest cultural landmarks all in one unforgettable winter journey.
Overview
The Dochula Festival, formally known as the Druk Wangyel Tshechu, is a vibrant
annual event held every December 13 at the breathtaking Dochula Pass, perched at
over 3,100 meters amid snow-capped peaks and lush pine forests. "Druk Wangyel"
translates to "Thunder Dragon Fulfillment," symbolizing the fulfillment of
aspirations under Bhutan's protective dragon emblem.
Performed uniquely by the Royal Bhutan Army, the festival honors Bhutan's
monarchy, the armed forces, and the nation's enduring values of peace and
spiritual devotion. The day unfolds with mesmerizing cham dances, where soldiers
dressed in elaborate silk costumes and ornate masks portray ancient deities and
protective spirits — blending sacred Buddhist rituals with dynamic martial
displays, accompanied by thunderous drumbeats, haunting horn blasts, and
rhythmic cymbal clashes.
The 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens, commissioned by Her Majesty the Queen Mother Ashi
Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, stand as a poignant monument nearby, commemorating
Bhutanese soldiers who lost their lives in conflicts. This festival not only
showcases Bhutan's rich spiritual heritage but reinforces national unity and
gratitude — a profound reminder of how Bhutan intertwines military valor with
Buddhist tradition in a celebration of harmony and resilience.
