Jhomolihari mountain landscape

Overview

The Dagala Trek, often called the "Thousand Lakes Trek," is a scenic moderate hiking route in Bhutan along the Dagala mountain range ridge, offering panoramic views of alpine meadows blooming with wildflowers like rare blue poppies and rhododendrons, high-altitude glacial lakes numbering over a dozen in sparkling turquoise hues amid glacial cirques, and distant Himalayan peaks including Bhutan's majestic Jomolhari plus far-off giants in Sikkim and Nepal that pierce the horizon on clear days. Trekkers encounter nomadic yak herder camps where semi-nomadic families tend vast herds amid stone-walled pastures and offer steaming cups of butter tea amid tales of ancient migrations, diverse flora and fauna. Blue sheep, Himalaya Marmot grazing at dawn, a symphony of alpine birds including Himalayan monal, blood pheasants and warblers filling the air with calls and pristine environments once used as a vital trade route from Thimphu to Dagana, carrying salt, wool, and spices through hidden passes.
